The Common Contents of a Language Course

Submitted by admin on Tue, 11/03/2009 - 22:11
 • Language course

Making the most of your language course is essential when you are carrying out this interesting endeavor. And one of the best ways to do so is to know what to expect when you are signing up to one of the language courses available out there. So to help you get a head start, here are some of the common items included in a language course.

Note: This is not a standard list of items all language teachers need to provide. Instead, this is a list to help you become aware of the common items normally included in a language course.

A Suitable Environment

Your language teacher should find a quiet place where you can hold your classes. This is usually not a problem in the case of language schools where rooms are provided. However, if you are hiring a freelance language teacher, he or she needs to select a quiet place for your classes. In addition to having little or no noise, the area should have an environment that induces good learning.

If you are doing the classes online via voicechat, your language teacher should be in a quiet environment prior to starting the class.

An Organized Course Outline

Your language teacher should provide you a list of topics that will be covered in the course. The topics in the course outline should be arranged logically. General topics should be divided into smaller ones. It is always a good idea to ask the language teacher if you could have a copy of the outline so you could refer to it and review it if necessary.

Creative and Challenging Techniques

Language courses yield better results when they are both entertaining and challenging. Your language teacher should provide means of keeping the topics interesting. This is to keep your attention in the course and help you learn each point much easier. An example of this is the use of multimedia materials such as audio files and videos.

Also, your teacher should have ways to continuously challenge your skills as you develop them through the course. This may come in the form of interactive quizzes and tests. Through this, both you and your language teacher can monitor your progress and focus on the topics you need further study in.

Practice Conversations

Your course should include a number of hours where you and your teacher would talk in the language you are learning. There are numerous topics you can talk about including the culture of the people whose native language is the one you are studying, current events, and your own personal experiences. This lets you directly apply the things you have learned in the course while you are taking it. It also lets your teacher identify and correct certain mistakes you would make while studying the language.

Sufficient Time for Questions and Answers

Oftentimes, you would have questions as you are studying a language. The course should have a particular number of hours dedicated to questions you may have that your teacher should address. This ensures that you would clearly understand the lessons you have tackled. Ideally, your teacher should provide a way for you to contact him or her after the class. This lets you ask questions you may come up with while carrying out other daily activities.

Publications for Reference

Your language teacher should have one or two books you can refer to throughout the course. These publications provide the details that support the topics in the outline. You can use these books during situations where you have questions but your teacher is currently unavailable. You can have a printed book in face-to-face language courses. In online language courses, you can make use of ebooks about the language you are studying.
