Richard Francis Burton not only spoke 29 languages, but he was also known as an explorer, writer, translator and orientalist among many other things.

Born in England, he lived in the 19th century (1821-1890). Early on, he showed a great talent for languages. He learned French, Italian and Latin. At age 20, he was already able to fluently speak several European languages. Later, he learned many other European, Asian and African languages. He was even able to learn two difficult Asian languages -- Gujarati and Hindustani -- in a relatively short time in order to serve as a translator for the British Army in India. In addition to the 29 languages, he had a functional grasp of a number of other languages and dialects.

Probably one of his most interesting ambitions was to learn the language of monkeys by observing them. He attempted this while in the army.

Richard Burton had two approaches to learning. As he was a traveler, he certainly picked up and used languages in their own environments. However, he also spent lots of time learning from books. He claimed to have learned about 300 words a day. He found it most effective not to spend more than one hour of learning at a time.

He also translated a lot, you have sure heard about the "One thousand and one nights", also known as the "Arabian nights". Burton was also the first English translator of the "Kama sutra". In addition, he translated The Lusiads, a Portuguese national epic.
