We all want to have that extra boost of confidence while we are starting to study a new language. And the best way to do so is to prepare a few things before your first language learning session or course. Below is a list of the most important things which any beginner in language learning needs to have.

Daily Schedule

Your daily schedule ensures that you would be able to devote time for studying your chosen language. If your present occupation is to study the language, you can make your schedule coincide with your language course. You should also create a daily schedule of language-related activities after your course.

If you have work or school during the daytime, you can dedicate a couple of hours for your language-related activities and create a schedule for them. This schedule may be relatively shorter compared to the above scenario. This gives you the opportunity to still have ample rest and sleep.

Dictionary

A dictionary can help you in learning a lot of words in your chosen language. This type of resource is useful especially when you encounter a new word and want to know what its equivalent word and meaning is in your native language. Get a dictionary that translates the foreign words to your native language and the other way around. For this purpose, you may need to get more than one dictionary.

Language Learning Materials

Your language teacher may have a specific book or manual which you would use during the course. In addition to this, you can enhance your learning experience by adding these materials that are in the language you are learning:

  • Magazines – These not only help you learn the language, but they also have interesting images, ads, and other entertaining information.
  • DVD’s of movies and TV shows – Preferably, you should get those with subtitles that are in your native language.
  • Newspapers – These help you learn the language and keep you updated with the events in the country that speaks the language.
  • Audio such as recorded radio programs – These help you understand the various ways in which people converse in the language.
  • Music with lyrics – Arguably the most relaxing and entertaining way to learn your chosen language.
  • Online resources – A very inexpensive way to improve your vocabulary and overall knowledge about the language.
  • Other books and manuals – These provide supplemental resources for topics you find too difficult.

Means of Contacting a Native Speaker

Apart from your language teacher, other individuals who speak the language can help you a lot as you are studying. You can ask your language teacher if he or she knows someone whose native language is the one you are trying to learn. You can make friends with this individual and have a particular number of hours every week to talk to him or her.

Alternatively, you can look for this person online. Once you have found such an individual, you can make each conversation beneficial for both of you by offering help if he or she wants to learn your native language.

Source of inspiration

Learning a language can be at times complex and even frustrating. Make sure you have a source of inspiration and motivation. This can be your friend who is aware of your endeavor. Talk to your friend about what you are doing and about other things as well. Also, you can find an activity you enjoy. Doing your chosen activity can help you ease the frustration. You can then face the hard topics with renewed focus and motivation.

This article is very interesting.I strongly agree that the internet as an online resources is a very helpful aid in learning a language .But I do not agree that it not expensive particularly when one considers that in some countries the internet is still a new phenomena. In such places, getting access to an internet service can be very difficult and as such expensive. I will also like to add that a language learner has to be very committed to learning the language. This is really very important as the lack of commitment may affect success in the learning of the language.
